unvoluntarily provoked thoughts of his unfortunate French collegue.

Dat blijkt uit het Extensive European Dating Report 2013 : "In een gewone maand komt het tot 1 afspraakje per 10 contacten op een datingsite. In februari stijgt dat cijfer spectaculair: 1 op 6 contacten leidt tot een ontmoeting in het echte leven", schrijven de onderzoekers.
Voor het Dating Report vergeleek een team van Nederlandse, Belgische en Zweedse wetenschappers de datingpraktijken van 4.000 vrouwen en mannen die actief zijn op Facebook en één van de 4 grootste Europese datingsites.
Er zijn meerdere redenen voor de piek in afspraakjes in februari. "Tijdens de eindejaarsfeesten worden singles met de neus op de feiten gedrukt. In januari kijken ze rond in hun sociale kring. Velen zetten de stap naar online dating als ze een maand later "nog altijd" geen relatie hebben. Ook de buzz rond Valentijnsdag is een extra aanzet om sneller in te gaan op een uitnodiging voor een afspraakje", legt hoofdonderzoeker Herald Formussen uit.
Op Facebook ligt de succesratio behoorlijk lager: "Op de sociaalnetwerksite gaat slechts 1 op 30 mensen in op een uitnodiging om af te spreken. De gedeeltelijke anonimiteit van echte datingsites maakt dat vrouwen sneller "ja" zeggen", aldus Formussen.
Vrijdag is trouwens de beste dag om een afspraakje met succes af te ronden, zo blijkt ook uit de studie. Bij een eerste afspraakje brengen de partners samen de nacht door in gemiddeld 17% van de dates. « Op vrijdagen stijgt dat percentage tot 34%. Dan hebben de mensen een heel week-end voor zich. De stress van de agenda valt even weg", verklaart psychologe Helena Störmund van de vakgroep Gedragspsychologie van de Zweedse Skövde-universiteit.
Het Extensive European Dating Report 2013 (EEDR13) werd gemaakt door de European Research Workgroup on Dating, een samenwerking van wetenschappers van de Zweedse Skövde-universiteit, de Nederlandse hogeschool van Utrecht, de VUB en de Universiteit van Florence. Voor het EED-rapport ondervroeg het team via een online survey 2.321 vrouwen en 1.679 mannen die een abonnement van minstens één maand hadden op één van de vier grootste Europese datingsites. De onderzoekers contacteerden ook mannen en vrouwen om anoniem hun dating-ervaringen te vertellen, zodat de cijfers in hun context konden geplaatst worden.
